Our Challenge
Due to advances in medical care and the reputation of world-renowned physicians at the C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital the occupancy level at the Ronald McDonald House has consistently risen. In fact, the House is typically at capacity with many families turned away simply because we do not have room. As the C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital and Women’s Hospital expands, increasing beds by 50%, the Ronald McDonald House must be prepared to meet even more increased future demand. The problem is, there is no space to expand the current location. Today the House cannot meet current demand and we are forced to turn families away for lack of space - but we have a plan to do better.
A Solution
This need can be met with a new “house” – “The House Within the C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital.” Building a Ronald McDonald House inside of a Children’s Hospital is a new and innovative concept. The new “House Within the C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital” will be one of only five of this nature in the world. It will primarily serve immediate families of the children admitted to one of the hospital’s three intensive care units. Families will be just steps away from where their critically ill children are fighting to recover. Opening this facility will also enable us to expand our services to help families within Ann Arbor and the surrounding communities. C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital has designated approximately 3500 square feet on the 10th floor adjacent to the Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit. This space will include 12 family guest rooms with private baths, a common living and kitchen area, and a small office. When families walk into this space, we want them to forget they are in a hospital and to feel as if they are home. The partnership that began over 25 years ago between the Ronald McDonald House and C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital is now leading the way in this innovative solution to meeting the needs of critically ill children and their families. We are expanding our program capacity and helping to improve children’s lives by building the “House Within the C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital.” With the new “House Within the C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital” the Ronald McDonald House will be able to serve approximately 1,200 more families each year for a total of 1,800 families.
When your child is sick, your world stops. You want the best care possible - even if it is hundreds or thousands of miles away. Studies clearly show that critically ill and injured children respond better to treatment and heal quicker and better, with a parent present. When a child is hospitalized and scared, the love and support of family is as powerful as any medicine a doctor can prescribe.
We know that the “House Within the C.S. Mott’s Children’s Hospital” is the best place for parents to be when their child is sick or injured. This specialized concept of a “House Within the Hospital” will support and strengthen families during a profoundly challenging time by providing lodging, emotional support and resources. We believe that when you change a child’s life you change their family, their community, and ultimately the world. . . . together we can Expand the House that Love Built.
